About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities. Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allen's tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world. Worked great with a 2" receiver July 27, 2010 Kimberly Hodges (BEND, OR, US) I bought this rack from amazon for a 3,500 mile cross country trip, and it held up great. I was carrying two heavy beach cruisers and a bike trailer, and the rack was solid for most of the trip. At one point I noticed a little side to side wobble, but it was only because the bolt thru the rack had loosened. After tightening it, it was solid again. I was most impressed with how the rack held up in the tilted position, as we were sleeping in the back of the truck and left it in the down position, fully loaded, for approx ten hours a day. The only thing I didn't like was that, on my truck, the rack blocked the access to crank down the spare tire, and I had to take the bikes and the rack off the truck after a blow out. I would imagine this would be the case with any brand of rack, however.
All in all, I was very pleased with the product and the price. Some people have mentioned that the rack wobbled, but I have a feeling that it was an issue with installation, or perhaps the fit is different with the 1 1/4" hitch. It fit great with my 2" hitch.
Great Rack! July 20, 2010 John D. Gaston (Russellville, AR United States) We are very satisfied with this product. It worked very well for a cross country trip. It's durable and easy enough to attach and detach. The price was fair as well.
Thank you Allen for a product that does what you say it does! May 26, 2010 Andrew K. (San Diego, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently moved from Chicago to San Diego - a long 2300 mile drive - and I wanted to bring my 3 bikes back with me. One, a mountain bike, and the other two beach cruisers. There was a lot of weight on the rack, but it held strong the entire way. I was admittedly nervous about the rack before I started, but it held strong and true, even when dealing with elements (wind, rain, and even dust storms).
I was very happy with the performance of the rack as well as the locking hitch pin that I bought separately. Both get two big thumbs up!
Bike hitch May 22, 2010 Oscar P (New York) The packaged arrived with out any problems. The instruction to set it up were easy enough. I just had to go buy a wrench and socket big enough to secure the hitch in the tow slot. I timed myself it only takes about 5-10 minutes to attach hitch to car and load two bikes on this rack. There is minimal swaying on the road. Works great for occasional needs to go to the park and ride the bikes. The pins are easy to use. The item it self is sturdy as well. Would reccommend to buy. Great cost compared to other bike hitches I have seen.
Is a very good rack mount but needs to be improve May 18, 2010 Ruben (Miami, Florida, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is made from a high quality material, versatile on holding the bikes, good looking and the price is even better but in my opinion needs to be improved to became a five star one; it doesn't fit properly in the std receiver and keeps moving too much on the road.
I would sugest the designers put some device that helps to fit better in between the std receivers and the mount rack to avoid excesive movement.
Ruben from DR.
